A carpet from the Manufacture Impériale et Royale de tapis de Tournay at TAMAT !

Recently acquired by the City, a foot carpet, exceptional by its dimensions, dated 1810 is the subject of an exhibition at TAMAT. This missing piece in the puzzle of Tournay’s textile history allows us to put the spotlight on an art industry that was renowned in Europe and far beyond for a century. The carpet with its ‘trophy’ motif evokes the splendour of the Napoleonic palace decor and an iconography of political propaganda value in the service of power.

A tour of the town then invites you to discover an emblematic place linked to textile and tapestry production over the centuries: the Saint-Piat Lefebvre factory. Once located in the heart of the city, the Manufacture remains little known. We suggest you discover the only trace left by this one.

An exhibition to be discovered at TAMAT thanks to loans from Mufim, the State Archives, CRECIT and the Tournai seminary library.
